09/11/2009

PLMJ partners Manuel Santos Vitor who is the deputy managing partner, Ricardo Oliveira and Tomás Pessanha were interviewed by the newspaper Expresso in a report about organisations that have human resources policies of career recognition and progression based on merit.

Manuel Santos Vitor, a PLMJ equity partner and the firm’s deputy managing partner, talks about his career path in the firm, from his time as a trainee to his current position. According to Manuel Santos Vítor the choice of future partners in the firm influences the evaluation of the around 1000 applications PLMJ receives. These candidates are viewed as people who will stay with the firm and will have every opportunity to reach the top of their profession.

Ricardo Oliveira, a PLMJ partner in the area of EU law, also speaks about his journey in the firm adding that the secret for the recognition of merit is enjoying the work you do and sharing a deep empathy with and identifying oneself strongly with the culture of the organisation.

Tomás Pessanha, head of  PLMJ’s regional office in Oporto, states that what has always attracted and motivated him is being part of a an organisation with a demanding atmosphere where he is able to deal with cases of great importance and complexity, something which is only possible in a firm of PLMJ’s scale.

The article also highlights the importance PLMJ places on the training of its lawyers. This training may be done in-house and includes not only legal training for the trainee lawyers but also “recycling” training for its lawyers and para-legal training aimed at developing the lawyers’ business skills. This in-house programme is also accompanied by incentives for PLMJ’s lawyers to specialise through post graduate, master’s and PhD courses for which the firm not only provides 50% of the tuition costs to support  the development and specialisation of its lawyers but also grants them paid leave for their studies.
