PLMJ in the Legal Business magazine’s Special Report on Africa

23/11/2009

The prestigious international magazine Legal Business has devoted a special report to Africa entitled “Team Work“. The article appears in the November edition.

PLMJ is amongst the law firms featured in interviews with its partners Sofia Gomes da Costa and Tiago Mendonça de Castro, the Lisbon-based coordinators of the joint ventures PLMJ has established with law firms in Angola and Mozambique.

The article analyses the trends in that region towards harmonisation of the various legal systems with a view to creating a more unified market and to bringing a sharp increase in foreign investment.

According to Sofia Gomes da Costa, although the African countries devastated by war are not preferred investment targets, it is clear that Angola is an example of a country on which foreign investors have centred their attentions. The country is undergoing widespread reconstruction with a number of major projects in real estate and infrastructure, so it is seeking from abroad the essential workers and professionals that projects of this type require.

As far as Mozambique is concerned, Tiago Mendonça de Castro’s opinion is that the government of the country has been adopting all the measures conducive to making Mozambique into one of the regions with the best conditions for attracting foreign investment. One of these measures involves reforms of the taxation system.
