Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the
protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement
of such data (the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR) began to apply more than one year
ago. Reaching this point involved a long legislative process marked by advances and setbacks, and
the process culminated with the publication of Law 58/2019 of 8 August – the law that implements the
GDPR into Portuguese law.
