Dacheng and PLMJ present opportunities for investment in China to Portuguese business leaders at AICEP.

The potential of the Chinese market for Portuguese companies was the theme of the conference jointly organised by AICEP Portugal Global and PLMJ on 17 May at AICEP in Lisbon. Representatives from Dacheng Law Offices are now in Lisbon and partner Xu Yongqian, coordinator of international relations at Dacheng and on the Chinese market met a restricted group of Portuguese companies. Luís Florindo, executive director of AICEP spoke about strategic partnerships between companies from both markets and Luís Sáragga Leal, PLMJ board president and head of PLMJ International Legal Network, presented the legal issues to be taken into consideration in both countries.

AICEP was the stage for a conference in which the representative China’s largest law firm, Dacheng Law Offices - a member of PLMJ International Legal Network - who is in Portugal at PLMJ’s invitation, presented as opportunities in the Chinese market to the investors who were present. These investors came from companies such as Mota Engil, Cimpor, Aquapor, the Ascendi Group, Vale do Lobo Resort, Millenium BCP, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the management of the Port of Sines, among others. Dacheng partner, Mr. Xu Yongqian spoke about market opportunities and gave a detailed presentation on the specific characteristics of the Chinese economy as well as the period of expansion the country is going through. He also underlined the reciprocal interest the Chinese have in investing in Portugal. Mr. Xu emphasised the special position Portugal holds as a vehicle and a partner for foreign investment in the CPLP (Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries). Susana Santos Vitor, the PLMJ international senior associate who has worked for over a year at Dacheng’s offices in Beijing presented a range of very practical advice for Portuguese investors who are thinking of investing in China with tips and rules to achieve success in negotiations with a country that enjoys huge potential but has cultural and commercial characteristics that must not be ignored. The presentation also carried a strong message of encouragement for business people make the most of the flourishing opportunities China has to offer. The president of the PLMJ board, Luís Sáragga Leal, presented the speakers and explained PLMJ’s role as a partner to clients who want to invest or who already have investments in China. He also announced the strengthening of PLMJ’s presence in China with the recent hiring of the firm’s first Chinese lawyer who will work with Susana Santos Vitor at Dacheng in Beijing and these two will soon also be joined by PLMJ Senior Associate Rita Assis Ferreira.
