Financial Times considers PLMJ one of the most innovative law firms in Europe.

06/10/2011
The Financial Times has named PLMJ as one of the 50 most innovative law firms in Europe and nominated the firm for the award of most innovative firm in continental Europe.
The law firm PLMJ has appeared for the first time in the ranking of the 50 best law firms in Europe. PLMJ is the only Portuguese firm to appear in the prestigious Financial Times – FT Innovative Lawyers ranking, which recognises innovation and originality in the legal market. This is the first time the FT has analysed Portuguese lawyers and PLMJ is not only in 42nd place among the 50 best law firms but was also ranked 5th in the top 21 most innovative firms in Continental Europe.
The FT Innovative Lawyers 2011 ranking was revealed last night in London at a ceremony at the Science Museum where PLMJ was represented by its board president Luís Sáragga Leal and by Jorge Brito Pereira, a partner from the firms banking and finance practice.
This ranking recognises legal innovation in operations handled by law firms and the Financial Times focused on the innovative solutions found by PLMJ in cases such as the Alicoop insolvency and restructuring, the Cimpor takeover offer, and ‘Operation Hurricane’. Also recognised was the firm’s strategy in innovative projects such as its training centre, PLMJ - Excelentia, its network of partners in Portugal and its internationalisation model which resulted in PLMJ International Legal Network, with partner firms in Angola, Mozambique, Brazil, Cape Verde, Macao and China. The criteria analysed were principally originality, rationality in the strategy adopted and the impact of the results achieved.
The motto adopted for PLMJ’s candidacy was “Boldness is to zig when everyone zags” and the firm had no hesitation in competing, demonstrating that it is possible to be daring and innovative while at the same time working with quality and thoroughness and achieving the best results. PLMJ has every confidence in its approach of working ceaselessly to exceed its clients’ expectations.
The result of all this work is PLMJ’s direct entry into the rankings of the international newspaper that is seen as a benchmark for quality across the globe and this translates into a clear sign of credibility and undisputed recognition.
Launched in 1888, the FT is based in the United Kingdom, printed in 23 cities across the world and distributed in more than 140. It is the choice of political leaders and those at the top of the corporate and commercial world.

Another prestigious award in a year of great challenges.
This award is announced a week after the president of PLMJ’s board, Luís Sáragga Leal, was chosen as European Managing Partner of the Year by the prestigious UK publication, The Lawyer, which also nominated PLMJ as one of the best Iberian law firms. A few weeks ago the international publication Iberian Lawyer picked two PLMJ partners, Tiago Duarte and Tomás Pessanha, as two of the best Iberian lawyers under the age of 40. Since the beginning of the year PLMJ has been recognised by a number of leading directories. WHO’S WHO LEGAL chose PLMJ as Best Portuguese Law Firm 2010 and the firm was also a finalist for the Chambers prize for excellence and was featured as a leading firm by PLC Which Lawyer.
The entry into the Financial Times ranking is a further vote of confidence from the market for the 220 lawyers and more than 150 support staff who work at PLMJ.
