PLMJ was the first Portuguese law firm to appear on the most recognised international ranking for the area of international arbitration. Now in its 11th edition, PLMJ has once again appeared on the ranking of the best arbitration teams in the world, and has consolidated its position as a market leader in Portugal.
Global Arbitration Review (GAR 100) is the leading international ranking for arbitration. Each year, it chooses the 100 best law firms from around the world in the area of arbitration and this edition refers to the year 2017, in which PLMJ Arbitration grew by more than 30% in invoicing, and won a number of mandates for international arbitrations, some of which were totally unconnected with Portugal.
The GAR ranking highlights the very strong track record of the PLMJ Arbitration team and its work on major cross-border arbitration cases, including in Brazil and, through the offices of PLMJ Network, in Mozambique and Angola.
Only seven Portuguese-speaking law firms appear on the GAR 100 ranking and, of them, five are Brazilian and two are Portuguese. PLMJ is in pole position in terms of the number of ongoing arbitration cases and the overall value of those cases.
The clients contacted by GAR also highlighted the excellence of PLMJ Arbitration, referring to its technical expertise, response capacity and reaction to its adversaries, its determination, and its permanent availability.
For Pedro Metello de Nápoles, the partner who heads PLMJ Arbitration, “we are enormously proud that GAR has recognised the consistency and leadership capacity the PLMJ Arbitration team in the market. Our focus on the size of the team and its cultural diversity have been crucial factors in its success and, year after year, have allowed us to remain among the best.”
PLMJ Arbitration is one of the key areas of PLMJ and of PLMJ Network. Its 30 lawyers, including eight partners, come from five different nationalities, and it has a presence through offices in Europe and Africa, where team members act as both lawyers and arbitrators. The team is equipped to represent clients in arbitrations in five languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and German), and it principally in the Latin American and sub-Saharan African markets.
