Tiago Duarte, a PLMJ partner who specialises in international investment arbitration, together with lawyer Pedro Ribeiro de Sousa (from the firm RPBA – Ricardo da Palma Borges & Associados), is taking part in the conference “The Relationship between Taxation and Bilateral Investment Agreements”. The conference brings together investment arbitration specialists and international tax law specialists and is taking place in Vienna from today until 4 July. This conference has been organised by the University of Vienna and its Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law in cooperation with the Doctoral Program for International Business Taxation and the WU Global Tax Policy Center. Tiago Duarte and Pedro Ribeiro de Sousa will present the report they have prepared on Portugal.
The main focus of this conference is to analyse the rights guaranteed for international investors whether by bilateral investment protection treaties or by conventions to avoid double taxation. These rights include the possibility for international investors to make claims against States directly in international arbitrations and this topic has become increasingly relevant in major cross-border investments.
